ABOUT THE SCHOOL
Crown Street Public School is a co-educational, inner-city primary school in the heart of vibrant Surry Hills. Established in 1849 to educate the children of convicts and other settlers, the school has a long history of education, tolerance and diversity. Being one of the oldest schools in Australia, the heritage-listed gothic main buildings are considered a neighbourhood landmark. There are currently 300 students and 21 teachers at Crown Street Public School, with 35 different languages spoken in the playground. All students learn Mandarin from specialist Chinese teachers and take part in the well-established Kitchen Garden program which has been running since 2009.
CROWN STREET KITCHEN GARDEN
Crown Street Public School’s well-established Kitchen Garden program is run year-round by an amazing team of volunteer parents. Each week a different class has their turn at growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing delicious food. Students learn about the environment, sustainability, nutrition, and developing positive food habits. They check on the schools’ 3 stingless beehives, help maintain the organic gardens, and cook in the schools’ own kitchen classroom, discovering new flavours and ingredients. It’s a fun, hands-on experience where students gain important life-skills in gardening, composting, cooking and teamwork.
